ANewGrantApplication

We need to be putting together a new grant application to EPSRC. The portfolio money starts to taper (to 80% then 60%) from April 2006.

The name of the game is that we can start to apply for normal responsive mode funding which starts at any time after the above date. The aim is that we try to achieve sufficent new grants that the overal funding rate of the group remains constant (or increases). If we do that then there is the possibility that EPSRC will renew the portfolio award for another 5 years when this one ends.

Doug already has a grant submitted and Steve is very close to submitting one. It is likely that these will go before the next EPSRC IT&CS panel in Feb 2006. We don't want to compete with each other too much, so it makes sense if we aim to get an application in to go before the May 2006 panel. This means that it needs to be ready for submission in February sometime.

In my opinion, an application needs to:

  • Be Novel
  • Sound Exciting
  • Sound useful (to industry - ideally have industry buy in)
  • Build on our experience and infrastructure (i.e be something that only we, in the UK are in a position to do.

This page is therefore intended to be the root of possible suggestions which will hopefully provoke discussion. At this point, suggestions need be no more than half baked. So here goes:
